I recently got a chance to test out the Bern Hudson MIPS Helmet, which is specifically designed for e-bike riders and urban commuters.

In my testing, I focused on fit, comfort, safety features, style, and overall practicality. Given its certification for e-bike speeds up to 27 mph, the helmet is clearly built with urban riding in mind.

In this review, I’ll walk you through my experiences with this helmet and how it holds up on a daily basis.

Key specifications

  • Price: $140 at bernhelmets.com
  • Weight: About 370g, making it lightweight enough for long commutes.
  • Safety Standards: Complies with U.S. CPSC, EN1078, and meets the NTA8776 standard for e-bike use. It also earned a 5 S.T.A.R. rating from Virginia Tech, with MIPS technology integrated to reduce rotational forces.
  • Fit System: The Compass Fit system allows you to adjust the helmet by twisting the dial.
  • Ventilation: Equipped with 13 vents that channel airflow.
  • Integrated Light: Features a removable LED light delivering about 6.6 lumens with three modes—steady, flash, and pulse. It’s rechargeable via micro-USB and lasts up to 10 hours.
  • Additional Features: Reinforced vents double as lock cut-outs for added convenience when securing the helmet, and the flip visor offers flexibility based on weather conditions.

Fit, adjustability, and comfort

I find the helmet’s fit to generally be very comfortable, and it’s very easy to adjust, but if you’re between sizes, you might have to spend a little extra time dialing in the perfect fit.

The fact that the sizing can run large means a careful measurement is necessary to ensure your head is properly secured. I went with size medium but in hindsight a size small would have probably fit me better.

Overall, the helmet is very comfortable for long bike rides, I have been using mine for leisurely e-bike rides with my family.

It’s lightweight enough for extended rides, though there have been moments when I’ve needed to tweak the chin strap or adjustment wheel at the rear (see photo below).

These minor adjustments don’t affect my ride because it’s so fast and easy to tweak, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning on long days in the saddle – this could be down to my helmet being a little large for me.

Design features

I’m a fan of the minimalist, skater-inspired look, and while it’s not a style I would normally go for, it has certainly grown on me.

The ‘Matte Sand’ colorway looks clean and modern, and it even offers a few spots where you can add stickers if you ever want to personalize it a bit, like I know many riders do.

The removable LED light at the rear, is a practical bonus for urban environments too.

I like that the Hudson Helmet has three different settings and is rechargeable via micro-USB -(USB-C would have been nicer but hey ho).

While its output of 6.6 lumens might not replace a dedicated bike light, it’s a useful backup that adds an extra layer of visibility and safety on the road.

With 13 strategically placed vents, the helmet offers decent airflow, which is important for city riding.

However, during the hottest days, the ventilation could be better. The design is clearly oriented towards urban use, with a focus on practical features like head coverage and integrated security options over breathability / airflow.

I appreciate the reinforced vents at the rear, that also serve as lock cut-outs, making it simple to secure the helmet with a D-lock.

The option to use or remove the flip visor adds a layer of style and versatility, letting you adjust your helmet based on changing weather conditions.

Construction, safety standards, and durability

The integration of MIPS technology is a key safety feature for me, It helps reduce rotational forces during impacts by allowing a slight slide, which I appreciate given the unpredictable nature of urban riding.

Knowing that it meets stringent safety standards, including NTA8776 and a 5-star rating from Virginia Tech, provides extra peace of mind when riding – that’s why we wear helmets, after all!

The in-mold EPS shell coupled with a low-friction inner layer that allows a bit of slide during impacts is a smart approach to safety.

My verdict

While the Bern Hudson MIPS Helmet is priced a bit higher than some other urban helmets with similar features, I believe the investment is justified by its MIPS system, safety credentials, integrated light, and overall cool looking design with integrated reinforced lock-vents.

It’s a solid choice for urban and e-bike riders who prioritize safety and practical features.

So, if you’re looking for a helmet that blends safety with urban functionality, and you like the style if it, the Hudson MIPS is definitely worth considering.
