Modern outdoor and activewear gear needs to be able to do it all: stretch with your movements, protect you from the elements, be durable, and feel soft against your skin – preferably all while keeping an eye on sustainability.
Say hello to Primeflex™ by Toray, a lesser known but still very much cutting-edge fabric that checks all the boxes when it comes to performance fabrics. In this article I’m going to explain what it is, how it works, the benefits of performance apparel that uses it, and finally I’ll share some noteworthy gear that I have recently reviewed that utilises it.
What is Primeflex™?
Primeflex is a bi-component fabri, meaning it blends two distinct fibers into a single yarn, creating a material that’s incredibly stretchy, strong, and soft. This construction not only ensures flexibility and comfort but also adds durability, so your gear moves with you and stays strong.
Primeflex’s partial plant-based composition brings sustainability into the mix, reflecting a commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising on performance.
Its adaptability makes it a versatile choice for everything from athletic pursuits to everyday wear, giving you confidence and comfort, no matter the activity.
The benefits of PrimaLoft for outer layer apparel
Unrestricted movement
Primeflex stretches in a mechanical manner, rather than stretching in the traditional sense, like Spandex for example – this also makes it more lightweight.
This makes it ideal for activities requiring freedom of movement, like climbing, yoga, or even long hikes where lightweight apparel is required or prefered. Unlike traditional stretch fabrics that can lose their elasticity over time, Primeflex maintains its shape and performance.
Soft feel
Comfort is another priority with Primeflex. Its smooth, soft texture feels great against the skin, making it equally suited for high-performance gear and casual, everyday pieces. This softness is something that really stood out to me when reviewing shells and shorts using this fabric.
Sustainability focus
Because it’s partially plant-based (sourced from corn), Primeflex reflects the growing demand for sustainable materials in outdoor gear.
