I recently had the opportunity to test out the REI Co-op Trailgate 30L Weekend Cooler, and I’ve got to say, it has left a strong impression on me.
I have reviewed a lot of different types of coolers in my time working at Trail & Kale, from hard coolers, to cooler totes, and even portable electric powered fridge coolers like the Dometic CFX3 45, for example. All with their own specific purpose and use case, with a wide range in pricing.
The REI Co-op Trailgate 30L Weekend Cooler blends a lightweight design with some thoughtful features that make it a practical option for camping or a weekend road trip.
In this review, I’m sharing my experience with the cooler’s design, performance, and overall functionality and quality, giving you a clear picture of what to expect if you’re thinking about adding it to your outdoor gear collection.
Key specifications
Here are the main details and proprietary features that caught my attention:
- Price: $160 at REI.com
- Weight: Approximately 6 lbs (5 lbs. 15 oz.)
- Capacity: 30 liters (1,831 cubic inches)
- Color of my review sample: Stone Green. Other colors are available.
- Insulation performance: With 10 lbs. of ice, it keeps contents below 40°F for over 67 hours
- Dimensions: 16 x 15 x 12 inches
- Materials: Outer case made of recycled nylon (bluesign-approved). Removable, insulated liner crafted from recycled polyester with EVA/PEVA
Build and design
One of the first things I noticed after unpacking the cooler, was the overall build quality, which I’d describe as exceptionally well-built.
The use of recycled nylon for the outer case is a nice nod to sustainability, and it also contributes to a durable, resilient structure that feels like it can handle a good amount of rough and tumble at the campsite, or on the beach.
The thermoformed hard flat top is another feature that I appreciate, It’s a solid surface that can be used as a makeshift tabletop or prep area when space is at a premium.
However, it’s important to note that while it works well as a platform for storing items, it isn’t built to support your weight like some hard coolers might be able to – little Seb could sit on there ok, though! 🙂
Weight and portability
When it comes to carrying outdoor gear, every ounce counts, so it’s important to have lightweight gear where possible.
I was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight this cooler is, especially compared to many hard coolers on the market.
Weighing in at just under 6 pounds, it’s easy to pick up and transport even before you load it up with food and drinks because it’s not so big that it can be overfilled.
The padded, adjustable shoulder strap adds to the portability factor, although I did feel that the handles could be a bit longer.
The current design, which uses a velcro fastening system for ease of use, works well, but longer handles would make lifting and carrying the cooler even more comfortable during long hikes or extended trips.
Storage and organization
Storage-wise, the Trailgate 30L cooler has some practical design touches. I like the storage zip pouch on the outside.
It’s a convenient spot for smaller items that you might need quick access to, like a phone, keys, or a small snack.
I also like the insulated insert, which can be removed for easier cleaning or used separately when you just need a simple bag without the extra insulation, this provides flexibility.
This means that on days when you don’t need the cooler’s insulation, you can simply use the bag as a rigid tote, much like a Bogg Bag.
Practical extras
Every now and then, a small accessory can make a big difference, the included bottle opener is one such detail that always comes in handy!
It’s a small touch, but when you’re out camping, at the beach, or on the road, having that extra tool available without needing to pack additional gear is a definite plus.
Also, the cooler’s zippered lid helps reduce the risk of leaks if the cooler tips over, a simple but effective design choice by REI.
Cooling performance
In terms of cooling performance, the specifications are solid. With just 10 lbs. of ice, the cooler is rated to keep contents below 40°F for over 67 hours.
Be sure to precool the cooler by filling it with ice a few hours before you head out.
The insulation works consistently, which is essential for long weekend trips where you want your food and beverages to remain cold without constant monitoring.
The removable, leak proof liner also ensures that the cold environment inside is maintained efficiently.
My verdict
Overall, the REI Co-op Trailgate 30L Weekend Cooler is a well-rounded choice for those looking for a lightweight, durable, and thoughtfully designed cooler for camping, beach days, or road trips.
Its construction quality, combined with practical features like the removable insulated insert, comfortable carry strap, storage zip pouch, and included bottle opener, makes it a versatile option for various outdoor activities.
While there’s minor room for improvement, such as slightly longer handles for easier carrying, the cooler’s design and performance largely live up to its promises.
If you’re seeking a lightweight, reliable cooler that keeps your gear cold over long trips and offers the flexibility to use it as a tote when needed, this is a very solid addition to your outdoor kit, and I’m excited to use it more over the Summer.
