However, it does feel noticeably snug in the midfoot, due to the integrated support cage that holds your foot securely in place. This snugness might feel restrictive to some, especially during the first few runs, but it does offer a reassuring sense of stability for those who need it. The knit upper material is somewhat breathable and has a bit of stretch, which helps accommodate foot swelling during longer or more intense runs.

It has a high 10mm drop from heel to toe, although it doesn’t actually feel that high—it feels more like a 6 mm drop to me, which might be a pleasant surprise for runners who typically avoid higher-drop shoes (like myself). At 9.6oz, the P1 strikes a good balance between being lightweight and sturdy, providing a solid foundation without feeling like you’re dragging extra weight around.

The P1 is for those who need a bit of extra stability in their daily runs, and it certainly delivers on this front. Thanks to its hybrid LightCell foam midsole construction—combining PEBA foam with supercritical foam, it has a balanced blend of cushioning and responsiveness. The result? A comfortable ride that absorbs impact well over long distances without feeling too squishy or losing its springiness.

The 3D Arch Rail is a new feature from Mount To Coast; it’s a plastic plate positioned just beneath the foot, which adds a layer of structured support, especially helpful for those with overpronation issues. It’s an innovation that seems to work very well, providing the kind of stability you’d expect from a much heavier shoe.

The dual-zone insole further enhances stability, cradling the foot and providing additional support where it’s needed most. This insole feels like a high end aftermarket insole, which is not what you may expect to find in most running shoes.

Despite being marketed primarily as a long distance daily stability trainer, the P1 is surprisingly versatile. Its balanced midsole foam makes it suitable not just for those steady long runs but also for faster-paced efforts. When you decide to pick up the tempo, the P1 holds its own, maintaining that critical balance between cushioning and responsiveness. Whether you’re doing a tempo run or simply want to pick up the pace during a longer training session, this shoe responds well, making it a great option for runners who need stability but don’t want to compromise on speed.

Traction-wise, the P1 features an outsole with GoFlow technology that provides good grip on various surfaces. The rubber outsole, with its flexible design and strategically placed ridges, allows for natural foot movement and biomechanically correct flex, which enhances both comfort and performance. Whether you’re a forefoot striker or a heel striker, the P1 offers sufficient cushioning to support different running styles, ensuring comfort throughout your stride – I tested this by running on my forefoot and also a stretch whilst heel striking.

The reflective details on the upper are a thoughtful addition, especially for those who find themselves training in low-light conditions. While the shoe is primarily designed for road running, its durability and grip suggest it could handle light trail conditions too, further enhancing its versatility.

The Mount To Coast P1 isn’t perfect, however, I mean it’s close… but the snug midfoot support cage may feel a little too tight for some runners, particularly those with wider feet or those who prefer a more relaxed fit. Although the tightness did seem to loosen up for me after about 20 minutes of running, it’s worth considering if you prefer a less restrictive shoe.

The finger pull at the rear of the shoe, designed to help you get them on more easily, is another feature that could use some refinement. It’s quite small and not very functional; a larger, more accessible pull loop could improve the overall user experience.

However, if you have particularly wide feet or are sensitive to midfoot tightness, you might want to give yourself a few runs to break them in, or consider other stability options.
