There’s no denying that On Cloud shoes are popular for their comfort, stylish look, and lightweight feel, BUT if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been hit with that really annoying (and somewhat embarrassing) squeak noise that somehow emanates from each step.
It’s not you doing anything wrong, and you’re certainly not the only one who experiences this – it’s a subtle flaw in the design of On’s Cloudtec midsoles. Don’t worry though, there are simple ways to fix it, and yes, I know, you should really have to ‘fix’ an expensive pair of running shoes, but needs must!
After reviewing so many On running shoes over the years (I got a bit of a name for myself in becoming the On Cloud expert) through their paces and chatting with other On Cloud fans, I’ve pinpointed the main reasons your shoes might be squeaking, and some easy solutions to keep them (and your sanity) in check.
What causes On Cloud shoes to squeak?
The squeak mainly comes from the CloudTec® midsole design, rather than the foam itself. On uses different types of foam like Zero-Gravity foam in the Cloud 5 and Helion foam in their CloudTec® Phase midsoles, but the issue is really how the holes in the CloudTec® pods cause friction over time – not the foam itself.
Here’s what’s happening:
- Primary cause: Friction in the CloudTec® pods. The foam inside these holes rubs together, causing friction and that annoying squeak often made worse by moisture on rainy days.
- Secondary cause: Moisture trapped under the insole, which can make the squeak even louder.
I’ve had both of these issues arise in the past. So, how do you fix them..?
The solutions
1. Rub coconut oil between the CloudTec® pods
Why it works: The foam rubbing against itself in the CloudTec® pods is the main culprit here often made worse on rainy days due to moisture on the foam. A little coconut oil can lubricate the foam and reduce friction, stopping the squeak at its source.
You could also dry them off when you get indoors but that doesn’t solve the issue wen walking outside in the wet.
How to do it:
- Apply a small amount of coconut oil to your finger, a cotton bud, or a cloth.
- Rub the oil into the holes of the CloudTec® midsole, focusing on the heel and midfoot where the squeaking is usually worse.
- Use just enough to create a thin layer, too much could be messy.
This simple trick silences that annoying noise instantly.
2. Use baby powder under the insole
Why it works: Moisture under the insole often causes friction, which can lead to squeaking. Baby powder absorbs moisture and helps reduce that friction.
How to do it:
- Remove the insole from your shoe.
- Sprinkle a light layer of baby powder (or cornstarch) underneath.
- Pop the insole back in and walk around to distribute the powder.
This method is great for humid conditions or after wet runs when moisture gets trapped.
Final thoughts
On Cloud shoes are known for their incredible comfort, but the unique CloudTec® design can sometimes lead to that pesky squeak. Whether you use coconut oil, baby powder, or just dry your shoes properly, you can easily get rid of the noise and get back to enjoying your runs in peace.
