There’s a category of daily trainer running shoes that’s ideal for most types of runs, and it’s called the super trainer. This do-it-all category of running shoes aims to end the daily cycle of swapping shoes for speed sessions, long runs, or recovery jogs.

It’s quite smart actually, especially when it works because it saves you money, and allows you to run most of your training runs in a running shoe you’re most familiar with. Then, come race day, all you have to do it swap them out for your favorite carbon plate super super shoes. It certainly makes choosing which shoes to wear a much easier task.

The ASICS Superblast 2 is the perfect example of a super trainer, done right but with a $200 price tag, does it live up to the hype – and is it worth that investment? Keep reading to find out.

First impressions, fit, and feel

The first time I slipped into the ASICS Superblast 2, I was impressed at the out-the-box comfort levels – I mean it felt a whole lot like the original Superblast but the heel lock is much improved, and it’s noticeably more breathable now too.

It has a true to size fit, with a medium width that accommodates a wide range of foot shapes, the engineered mesh upper is soft and stretchy, giving a snug yet comfortable fit. Imagine the feeling of your feet settling into a pillow but with enough structure to keep you locked in – structure is very important when it comes to cushioned running shoes – otherwise instability comes into play, and nobody wants that!

If you’re like me and sometimes run in low light, you’ll appreciate the reflective highlights for visibility too. Plus, that wide finger loop on the heel makes slipping these on easily, even with gloves – which is lucky because we’re heading into winter now.

ASICS Superblast 2 performance review

Can one shoe really handle it all? That was my big question going into my first run. Fast intervals, long, slow runs, and everything in between. Turns out, the Superblast 2 absolutely delivers. Here’s why.

The dual-layer midsole is still magic

The secret sauce is in the midsole – the FF TURBO™ PLUS foam on top is stiff enough to store energy well and super responsive once that energy gets released – it compresses underfoot and springs back with great energy, making it perfect for speedwork. Underneath, the lightweight FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO provides a soft, cushioned ride, absorbing impact and giving a smooth, light feel, even on long runs.

Whether I’m cruising at 6-minute kilometers or pushing the pace to 4-minute kilometers, the shoe feels snappy when I need it to and cushioned when I slow the pace and need that too. It’s truly a do-it-all trainer that can match your mood, training run, and pace.

The cushioning is soft, making them perfect for long, slow miles but without the sluggishness that comes with some overly plush running shoes (those do serve a purpose however). With a 45mm stack height in the heel, it absorbs the shock for heel strikers, while still offering plenty of responsiveness up front for forefoot runners, like myself. It feels like you’re gliding across the pavement running in these.

One thing that surprised me was how stable the Superblast 2 feels

Stability and speed

One thing that surprised me was how stable the Superblast 2 feels, despite its neutral classification and balanced-to-cushioned ride. The wide platform underfoot and dual-layer cushioning give you a solid base, so whether you’re weaving through pedestrians on city streets or tackling tight corners, you won’t feel off balance – you can see me testing this in my video review above.

And if you’re a heel striker, you’ll love the smooth transition from heel landing to toe take off, thanks to the well placed rocker geometry. It’s a smooth experience, and not once have I felt a jarring impact; just a seamless roll forward with every step.

Is the extra weight a concern?

At 9.1 oz, the Superblast 2 is slightly heavier than its predecessor (the Superblast 1 weighed 8.6 oz). But here’s the thing, it doesn’t feel heavy at all during the run – and to be fair it’s not heavy at all for a super trainer, just heavier than its predecessor. Even during longer runs, the shoe feels light and fast.

That said, I’d love to see ASICS shave off a bit of weight in future versions, perhaps the Superblast 3? It really will make this pretty much perfect shoe EVEN better.

What’s New? Superblast 2 VS Superblast 1

If you were a fan of the Superblast 1, you’re going to love the updates in version 2.

ASICS clearly listened to user feedback (including, hopefully mine) and made several key improvements needed, that I picked up on in my original Superblast review:

Improved outsole

No more annoying pebbles stuck in the gaps! The new pattern minimizes debris, making it perfect for runners who frequent gravel paths.

Enhanced Fit

The heel lockdown has been improved, so no more having to use DIY solutions like the racer’s loop heel lock method.

Breathability Boost

The upper is now even more breathable, with key areas featuring a wider knit pattern that improves airflow on hotter days.

Are they worth the investment?

Here’s the million-dollar (well, $200) question: Are they worth it? In my opinion—absolutely. If you’re someone who switches between multiple pairs depending on the type of run, the ASICS Superblast 2 could easily replace two or three shoes in your rotation. It handles speedwork, long runs, and recovery runs with ease, all while providing an super comfortable and responsive ride.

It’s not cheap, but considering its versatility and durability, you’re getting great value for money.
