For those of us who crave adventure and frequently find ourselves on isolated mountain trails, there’s a running technology / component brand worth knowing about: RECCO®.

While you may have heard of it in skiing or mountaineering circles, RECCO technology is now being used in trail running gear to add a layer of security for runners in remote areas. Here’s a breakdown of how it works, why it matters, and what to look for when choosing gear that implements RECCO technology.

What is RECCO® Technology?

RECCO is a radar-based rescue system that helps search and rescue teams locate people in difficult-to-reach areas worldwide. It works by embedding small, lightweight reflectors into clothing and gear, which allow specialized RECCO detectors to locate missing individuals when they’re outdoors.

When a RECCO detector sends out a radar signal, the reflector responds, making it possible to find someone even in low-visibility conditions.

What makes RECCO especially practical for trail runners is that these reflectors are entirely passive. There’s no battery to charge, no switch to remember to turn on, and no maintenance required. Once a RECCO reflector is in your gear, it’s ready whenever you are – and it never stops working.

How RECCO works for trail runners

Trail running often means heading out solo or with minimal gear into remote areas where the usual safety nets like cell service can be limited or more than likely nonexistent. This is where RECCO technology provides a little peace of mind – in the same way a satellite messenger can.

  • Extended Search Coverage: RECCO is used by rescue teams across 32 countries, with detectors available in regions known for outdoor sports, like the Alps and Rockies. For international runners or anyone heading into backcountry zones, it’s a reliable global option for visibility and safety. Learn more about the systems reach on the Recco website.
  • Non-Intrusive, Passive Protection: Unlike other safety devices that rely on power or cellular/satellite coverage, RECCO has nothing to activate or check; it simply exists in your gear, offering added safety.
  • Durability and Weight: These reflectors are ultra-light and waterproof, so they don’t impact your gear’s durability or weight – they can handle extreme outdoor conditions.

Why RECCO Reflectors are making their way into trail running gear

For years, RECCO has been popular among skiers and mountaineers, for those who find themselves skiing off piste, in avalanche prone areas, but trail running brands are beginning to see the value in adding this search tech into their products – and I’m so thankful for this.

Many premium trail running jackets and even some trail shoes are beginning to include RECCO reflectors, allowing runners to be locatable on isolated or technical terrain where standard GPS or cellular devices may not work.

Running gear with RECCO Technology

As RECCO’s presence in trail running grows, some gear manufacturers are starting to integrate these reflectors into popular high-performance items, including a couple that I reviewed this year:

  • Arc’teryx Norvan Shell: Known for its breathability and weather protection, this waterproof running jacket is a great option for long, technical trail runs in alpine areas, with RECCO technology embedded for safety in remote locations. Learn more in my Norvan Shell review.
  • CamelBak Apex Pro Run Vest: This advanced running vest includes an integrated RECCO reflector, enhancing safety during trail runs. This running hydration pack offers ample storage and hydration options, making it suitable for ultra running. Learn more in my Apex Pro review.

The bottom line

While the RECCO system might not replace more advanced tracking devices or personal beacons, it’s a valuable layer of passive safety that every trail runner should consider having in one of their core items of clothing.

With more brands beginning to integrate RECCO into their trail running jackets, shoes, and vests, it’s an accessible upgrade for runners who frequent unpredictable or isolated environments. Having RECCO in your gear might not be noticeable day-to-day, but it can make all the difference in an emergency.
