Pura Smart Diffuser Review: The Future Of Home Scenting Is Here

The Pura 4 Smart Diffuser is an enjoyable, affordable way of bringing clean scents into your home, that you can adjust and control using an app on your phone (with a set and forget function) – which is great if it’s something you’re considering for yourself, or as a gift for a friend!

In this review I explain Pura’s key features, how it works, how to choose the best scents, and my experience using one in my own home, shared with my wife Helen, 1yr old son, two cats, and a cheeky dog (Kepler) – now you know why I need a ‘pet friendly’ diffuser, haha.

About Pura Smart Diffusers

The Pura Smart Diffuser is a home fragrance device with a difference – and a much smarter (and safer) alternative to scented candles and basic aroma diffusers you may have tried in the past. Pura now has a tabletop diffuser – to learn more about it, read my Pura Plus review.

The Pura 4 diffuser itself costs around $50, and holds one or two scent units, which you can mix and match and replace whenever you like. The cover pulls off and snaps on very easily thanks to Pura’s use of little magnets (see image below) – and it’s those little details that you don’t really see that make the Pura 4 feel premium.

You can control all the elements of the Pura 4 diffuser right from your phone using the Pura app (available on App Store / Google Play), including setting schedules and timers, lighting effects, as well as controlling the intensity of the fragrances being released, so each room can have a different scent and time schedule. It’s a really neat system and so far it has worked flawlessly!

Check Pura’s website for any current deals or discounts as well as bundles including start scent packs – last time I checked, they were offering a free diffuser if you buy 6 months’ worth of fragrances, which is a great deal.

Each of the scent refills cost around $15 (some a few dollars more, some less), and how long they last depends on how long you run them for, and at what intensity. You can expect a Pura scent to last a total of around 120 hours, and cover a room of up to 1000 square feet depending on the fragrance and intensity you select. You can buy them as one-offs, whenever you like, or on an autoship subscription, which gets you a 20% discount and other subscriber benefits (read more about those here).

What really stands out with this product is how FUN and also easy it is to use – but I also appreciate how nice it looks – I mean if it was ugly, I just flat out wouldn’t be using it. Selecting the fragrances each month is enjoyable (browse their current selection), then plugging the diffuser in, setting it up and running with the app on my phone has also been enjoyable, simply because it’s fast and it just works.

Then, of course, you get to actually enjoy the scent, whether that’s in your living room, bedroom, office, bathroom or utility – or maybe your car, if you get the Pura Car diffuser version (which I have not tried yet).

Controlling it with the app

Essentially, you can use the app to get fragrances released when and where you want, for how long and at any intensity you wish. You can also set the mood lighting color you want the device to give off, or choose no light at all.

It has a very clear and user-friendly interface you can play around with. Its functions include the ability to select and manage your choice of scents – including switching between two different scents (as the diffuser unit can hold two at a time). I also love how the diffuser automatically recognises the scent names that you install via the QR codes on the bottom – it’s very clever.

This is great if, for example, you want an energizing scent in the morning as you get going for the day, and a calming one in the evening as you wind down.

If you’re a subscriber it sends you a reminder before the next autoship so you can adjust the order, choose different scents and quantities.

It is worth noting that the Pura Home diffuser does require a wifi connection to work (not the case for Pura Car), so if you’re planning on getting one make sure it’s somewhere that you can hook it up to your wifi from.

Is it safe for children and pets?

One of the key factors that attracted me to Pura is that all their fragrances are created with clean ingredients and safe for use around pets and children.

Did you know, that many standard fragrances that regular diffusers or candles are made with are actually toxic to cats and dogs? Way more than you might have imagined. So, the fact that I can shop any Pura fragrance, and not worry about selecting the ‘wrong’ one that may cause harm to my pets, is super important to me. Of course, the same goes for kids, who can be much more sensitive than adults to fragrances and other elements in their environment, too.

The fragrance marketplace, and my favorites

Branded collaborations, limited editions, bestsellers, seasonal themes… there are loads of ways to browse scents and you can get lost, in a good way, in exploring all your options!

There are so many to choose from, and this is what makes the subscription option so compelling, as you can line up fragrances that catch your eye so you get to receive them in future deliveries.

In case you were wondering, my current favorite fragrance is ‘Gone Hiking‘ (of course!!) which includes scents of pine, cassis, fresh waters, jasmine, cedarwood, rosebud, sandalwood, moss and ivy. That’s closely followed by Otherland ‘Canopy’, which is described as ‘luscious greens and tangled vines as summer dew, bright ivy greens, and ripened California fig swirl together for a scent that’s a little sweet, and a lot of fresh.’ MMM!

Is it worth buying?

The Pura system is totally worth the modest $50 price tag, and for that, you also get a really premium product and user experience – I can’t recommend it enough! You can shop Pura 4 diffusers and the full range of scents, as well as bundles, gift sets and scent subscriptions at Pura’s website.

How the subscription plans work

While you don’t have to subscribe at all, it may be worthwhile doing, depending on how you plan to use it, because you get 20% off fragrances when you subscribe to any scents, and you can choose your delivery frequency (from 4, 8 or 12 weeks), adjust or cancel your subscription, and swap fragrances using the Pura app. Your Pura diffuser’s one year warranty also gets upgraded to a lifetime warranty when you’re a subscribing customer.

If you plan to use it regularly, and like the idea of treating yourself to a new scent every month or so, then it’s definitely worth setting up a subscription to get the discount!
