Boulder, CO (November 22, 2024) — PAKA, the sustainable apparel brand celebrated for its performance-driven alpaca fiber gear, has taken a giant leap in transparency and sustainability by expanding its Traceable Alpaca Program across its entire product line.
From its roots in the Andes Mountains of Peru, PAKA has always prioritized connecting consumers to the origin of their clothing. Now, every PAKA product includes a QR code on its hangtag, giving customers an unprecedented level of insight into the exact alpaca herds and regions where their garments began.
This milestone comes after years of development, beginning with a 2022 pilot program for PAKA’s flagship hoodie (which I absolutely love wearing all the time – photo below). The journey involved cataloging sourcing data for all fibers, culminating in today’s robust digital traceability platform.
How PAKA’s traceability program works
Each QR code takes customers to a digital map, showcasing the precise coordinates of the alpaca herds that supplied the fibers for their garment.
Additionally, customers receive an Origin Certificate, developed in partnership with yarn mills Michell and Inca Tops and the Asociación Internacional de la Alpaca (AIA).
“PAKA started in the Andes Mountains, where alpacas have evolved alongside the local alpaqueros for thousands of years,” said Gisella Garate, PAKA’s Director of Peru and Impact. “When we began, there was no supply chain set up. We had to build this bridge ourselves to trace the alpaca fiber in your clothing from start to finish.”
Impact beyond transparency
Transparency is just one part of the equation – PAKA is using its platform to give back to the Andean communities that make its products possible. The key initiatives include:
- 1% of revenue donated to local communities.
- Construction of greenhouses at high altitudes to combat anemia by providing iron-rich produce to alpaquero families.
- Financing university tuition for 17 young women in Peru in 2024 alone.
