Fit and feel

The Brooks Caldera 7 fits true to size, offering a bit of extra room to accommodate foot swelling during long intense, or hot runs. The wide platform and roomy toe box allow for natural toe splay, which is super important for maintaining proper running biomechanics, especially on climbs.

The upper is constructed from a durable mesh that ensures breathability, while reinforced areas provide extra protection against trail hazards like rocks and roots.

The traditional lacing system, enhanced by a convenient elasticated loop for tucking away long laces, ensures a secure fit. And finally, the collar and heel counter are well-cushioned, adding to the overall comfort.

Brooks Caldera 7 Review: The Great Descender Has a Soft Sole 4 - Trail and Kale | Trail Running & Adventure

Let’s bound into the heart of this Brooks Caldera 7 review, how they perform on the trails. These shoes are built for long-distance comfort, and I’m pleased to say, they truly deliver on this promise. Here’s my breakdown of their performance across various terrains and conditions.

Climbing

The Caldera 7 shines on climbs. The TrailTack Green rubber compound outsole offers exceptional traction, comparable to the renowned Vibram Megagrip. This outsole ensures you can dig into trails confidently, whether you’re ascending steep inclines or tackling technical terrain.

The wide platform provides stability, which is nice to have when you need that extra push uphill, and the wide toe box allows your feet to splay, and hence more natural biomechanics and more efficient stride. It’s also very breathable so your feet don’t overheat on steep climbs.

Descending

One of the most exhilarating aspects of trail running, for me at least, is the descent, and the Caldera 7 doesn’t disappoint – in fact it positively surprised me.

The traction and stability offered by the TrailTack outsole make these shoes perfect for fast, confident descents on moderately technical terrains, single track, and fire road type trails.

The cushioning in the midsole absorbs impact well, reducing the strain on your legs and allowing you to maintain speed and control while the wide platform again proves beneficial, offering a stable base that makes you feel like you’re gliding over the trails.

Flat sections and speed

On flatter sections, the Caldera 7’s responsiveness was a surprising hit for me too, I mean a cushioned running shoe doesn’t always provide a huge amount of response but when that sweet spot balance is hit, you’ll know about it.

The DNA Loft 3 midsole strikes that all so desirable balance between plush cushioning and springy responsiveness. At 10.7oz, they might not be the lightest trail running shoes out there, but the cushioning and protection they offer more than compensate for the extra weight.

Comfort and stability

The Brooks Caldera 7 does a great job of providing a comfortable ride over long distances. The high stack height of the midsole offers substantial cushioning, protecting your feet from sharp rocks and rough terrain.

Despite the thick cushioning (it’s actually not that high of a stack, as part of what you see on the outside of the shoe midsole is where it wraps around your foot to cradle it), the shoes remain stable, thanks to the wide platform and the way the midsole wraps around your feet. This design cradles your foot, providing a sense of security without the need for additional support structures.

Durability

Durability is another strong suit of the Caldera 7. The reinforced areas on the upper protect against abrasion from rocks and roots, making it more durable than the previous version.

The TrailTack outsole shows minimal wear after multiple runs (all of which also include some running on pavement to get to my local trailhead). These shoes are built to last, making them a worthwhile investment for serious trail runners.

Overall impressions

Running in the Brooks Caldera 7 is a joy, the combination of comfort, stability, and traction makes them versatile for various trail conditions and I think the majority of trail runners will enjoy these too. Whether you’re running on loose dirt, rocky paths, or steep inclines, these shoes provide the support and confidence needed to tackle most trails.

They might not be the best choice for technical, high-frequency rocky terrain, but for most trail runners, they are an excellent option.

Are they worth buying?

At $150 from brooksrunning.com, the Brooks Caldera 7 offers great value. They are versatile, durable, and provide excellent comfort and stability for long-distance trail running.

If you’re looking for a shoe that can handle a variety of terrains while keeping your feet comfortable and protected, the Caldera 7 is a solid choice. They’re particularly well-suited for runners with wider feet or those who prefer a bit of extra room in their shoes.
