A quick look at Black Diamond and what Primaloft is
Black Diamond is no stranger to creating high-performance gear, and their reputation in the outdoor community is well-deserved. I recently reviewed their excellent Distance Carbon Z trail running poles which I’ve been using for years.
This is a brand that has a long history of making gear that stands up to the demands of harsh environments. The Solution Hoody fits right into that legacy, offering something that’s not just tough but also thoughtful, with sustainable materials and PFC-free DWR for weather resistance.
Now, what sets this jacket apart is the PrimaLoft® Gold Eco insulation – Unlike down, which can get weighed down in damp conditions, PrimaLoft is a synthetic insulation designed to keep you warm even when wet. It’s lightweight, compressible, and made from recycled materials; so it’s a win for both performance and the planet.
What’s good
This hoody packs a serious punch for its weight – with 60g of PrimaLoft Gold Eco, it’s remarkably warm for how light (13.4oz) and thin it feels. I’ve worn it on cold, windy mornings, here in Northern California, and it’s held its ground. You feel the warm the moment you put it on.
The windproof design is really good too, I like how the elasticated knit cuffs and cordlock hem keep cold air from coming in, and even in milder rain, the water-resistant outer kept me dry, the one day it actually rained here this month.
Premium build quality
Black Diamond never cut corners, it’s why it has managed to uphold such a strong brand over the years since it was founded in 1989. The materials feel durable, and little details like those elasticated cuffs and adjustable hem make a noticeable difference in keeping the cold out.
These features ensure that cold air doesn’t sneak in, even when you’re on the move or if you’re wearing gloves. The athletic fit is another highlight for me, it’s snug in all the right places but never feels restrictive.
The hood is well-designed and functional too, with enough room to wear over a helmet if needed, and it has a high collar that covers your chin keeping cold out in blustery conditions. Peripheral visibility remains good on the Solution Hoody too, as the hood does not extend too far forward beyond your side vision.
Packability
One of the cool features is how easily this jacket packs down into its own pocket – many other midlayers can do this also but it’s a great feature that I’m glad Black Diamond included.
If you own this jacket and are wondering which pocket to use, it’s the left hand pocket, you’ll notice it’s the only pocket with a double sided zipper, so you can do the pocket zip up once the jacket is stuffed inside.
Once packed, it’s easy to throw in your bag without taking up much space, which is key if you’re moving between varying temperatures or want something compact for travel. Remember, when storing this jacket and other insulated products like sleeping bags, do not store packed down, as the insulation will lose its ability to expand (reducing effectiveness) over time.
Perfect for wet, mild climates
Living in Northern California (the Bay Area), where it’s not always freezing but definitely damp when the fog rolls in, I’ve found this jacket to be ideal.
It insulates well without overheating, and the PFC-free DWR finish does a solid job at repelling light rain and moisture.
What’s not so good
A snug fit for some
While I found the fit to be perfect for my frame, if you are of a larger build or broader upper body, then this jacket may feel a bit tight in the chest, especially when layering underneath. It’s something to keep in mind if you plan on wearing thicker base layers.
Water resistance could be improved
Although the DWR treatment works well for light rain, this is not the jacket you want to rely on for downpours. After an extended time in wet weather, the outer fabric will likely start to absorb moisture – a common trait of DWR treatment which is a coating to make fabric waterproof. You’ll want to have a proper shell too, if the rain really kicks in.
The verdict
So, is the Black Diamond Solution Hoody worth that relatively high price of $280? Absolutely. It’s a lightweight, warm, and packable jacket that’s perfect for all-mountain, or every day use in colder months, especially in places where the weather is unpredictable but not extreme.
With solid insulation, high-quality materials, and an athletic fit, this hoody delivers great performance without the bulk, and I’m going to continue enjoying wearing this throughout the winter.
For me, this jacket has earned its place as a go-to mid-layer for fall hikes and winter adventures. If you’re looking for warmth, windproofing, and eco-friendly insulation, it’s worth checking out.
