Nocs Provisions just launched the most compact full-size binocular ever made

The Field Issue 42 packs 42mm optical power into a body the size of a 32mm, and it comes in four seriously good-looking colorways

NOCS Field Issue 42 launch

Nocs Provisions has just dropped its latest optic, and it's a genuinely interesting one.

The Field Issue 42 is being positioned as the most compact full-size binocular on the market right now; fitting a 42mm objective lens into a chassis that's the same size as a standard 32mm mid-sized binocular.

That's a meaningful engineering achievement if you care about portability without giving up low-light performance.

What makes it different

Most full-size 42mm binoculars are noticeably chunkier than their 32mm counterparts.

That extra glass means more light-gathering ability and better performance at dawn, dusk, and in shadowy terrain, but it usually comes with a size and weight penalty that makes you think twice about throwing them in a pack.

Nocs says they've solved that tension; at 571g and 5.4 inches long, the Field Issue 42 is genuinely pocketable for a 42mm optic. The comparable Pro Issue 42mm in their lineup, which uses Broadband Fully Multi-Coated lenses and a slightly wider field of view, comes in at 680g and 5.7 inches, so the size difference is real and measurable.

The optical setup is solid for the price point. Inside you'll find Swiss-designed BaK4 roof prisms and HiFi Fully Multi-Coated lenses, which Nocs says delivers a 394-foot field of view at 1,000 yards on the 8x42 variant.

That's a wide, immersive view well suited to birding and general wildlife watching — and if you've been using the Nocs Standard Issue 8x25 as your go-to, this is a meaningful step up in low-light performance and reach. The 10x42 version narrows that to 326 feet at 1,000 yards but gives you more reach which is useful for scanning open terrain or picking out detail at distance.

Built for actual outdoor use

The housing is wrapped in Nocs' proprietary ToughWave Ribbed Rubber Armor, a 360-degree injection-molded ribbed rubber exterior that's designed to absorb impacts and give you a confident grip whether your hands are cold, wet, or muddy.

It's IPX7 waterproof, meaning it can handle submersion up to one meter for 30 minutes, and the internal chambers are nitrogen-purged so fogging isn't a concern when temperatures shift.

There's also a multi-stop twist-up eyecup system, built-in objective lens covers (a nice detail that the smaller Field Issue 32mm doesn't have), and full tripod compatibility for long observation sessions.

Every pair is backed by Nocs' "No-Matter-What" Lifetime Warranty, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Colorways and variants

The Field Issue 42 launches in four beautiful colorways across two magnification options: 8x42: Jade Green / Eddy Blue 10x42: Brick Red / Sage Green

All four finishes follow Nocs' signature style; bold, nature-inspired tones that look as good hanging around your neck as they do pressed up to your face in the middle of nowhere.

Who tested it

To validate field durability, Nocs partnered with wildlife biologist and conservationist Forrest Galante (best known as the host of Discovery Channel's Extinct or Alive) to put the optics through real-world use in demanding environments.

The logic being: if the gear can survive a day tracking rare species with Galante, it can handle pretty much anything the average adventurer throws at it.

Environmental credentials

In keeping with Nocs' broader ethos, the Field Issue 42 ships in 100% plastic-free recyclable packaging. Nocs has been a 1% for the Planet member since day one, holds Climate Neutral certification, and is a National Audubon Society partner.
