If you’ve ever wished your hiking boots felt more like your favorite trail running shoes, Hoka just granted that wish.
The brand’s latest release, the Mafate X Hike, officially launches today (September 12, 2025), and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most innovative hiking shoes Hoka has made to date.
Built off the same DNA as the Mafate X, this new hiker delivers soft cushioning, rockered efficiency, and carbon plate propulsion, all wrapped in a more rugged, trail-ready package.
And in a first for Hoka, the Mafate X Hike also includes integrated RECCO® reflector technology, which helps search-and-rescue crews locate you in an emergency.
What makes the Mafate X Hike different?
At its core, this shoe is a hybrid: it walks the line between cushioned and race-ready ultra running shoe, and technical hiking boot.
Here are the details:
- PEBA midsole core for serious rebound and responsiveness underfoot
- Carbon fiber plate for added propulsion and stability over long distances
- Supercritically foamed EVA carrier to balance softness and structure in the midsole
- Vibram® Megagrip outsole for all-terrain traction in wet and dry conditions
- Neoprene ankle collar for secure, sock-like support, and built in gaiter
- RECCO® rescue reflector built into the upper
All this comes in at 16.33 oz (462g) per shoe, with a massive 42mm heel / 34mm forefoot stack height. It’s built to go big.
Who it’s for
Hikers and fastpackers who want max comfort without sacrificing protection.
If you’re logging big mileage over varied terrain and want a shoe that keeps you relatively light on your feet, but still handles like a technical hiker, the Mafate X Hike will fit the bill.
The integrated RECCO tech also makes it ideal for more remote outings or alpine terrain where safety features matter.
Price and availability

It comes in men’s and women’s sizing, with one colorways at launch.
This launch shows Hoka is continuing to blur the line between categories, applying its running expertise to the trail and mountain space in a way that feels practical, not gimmicky.
The addition of RECCO® tech and a true hiker-style upper makes this more than just a beefed-up trail shoe.
